Letter from a winter wonderland
Luminasio, 3rd February 2012
Hi everyone!
Winter has arrived at last! I'm sure you're enjoying the extra holiday from school. Are you making snowmen? Having snowball fights? If you have a garden, try making snow-animals, a sitting snow-dog, for example!
Up here in the Appenines, we are very isolated. Noone has cleared the road to the valley but we have made paths round the houses. We still have food in the freezer but there are no shops up here to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.
The birds are desperate for food so we put crumbs (bricciole) and seeds (semi) on the window-sills for them and watch them feed. The robin (pettirosso) was the first to see the food and tell all the others. Then the bluetits (cinciallegre) and the coaltits (cinciarelle) arrived, performing acrobatics between beakfuls (beccate). There are also larger birds like magpies (ghiandaie) and blackbirds (merli).
Our car is under the snow 1km down the hill. It was impossible to drive home Tuesday night, so we climbed the hill in the dark, but it wasn't really dark because the snow showed us the way. We were a bit worried about wolves (lupi) but we didn't see any. Usually, there are deer (caprioli e cerbiatti) and porcupines (istrici) around, but everything was quiet. The next morning, we saw a hole (buco) in the snow and pawprints (impronte) leading up a tree. A squirrel (scoiattolo) had slept under the snow!
Have you got any snow-stories to tell? Write to us and we'll put them on the website - you might even win a prize!
See you soon!
